Different types of marriages are possible and will be chosen according to the wishes of the future spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Secular marriage, religious marriage or civil marriage \u2013 each type of marriage responds to specific rules and objectives.<\/p>\n<h2>Definition of a secular marriage ceremony<\/h2>\n<p>When we speak of a secular event, we are referring to an event independent of religions, not subject to religious dogmas and rituals.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to marriage, a secular marriage can take two forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a civil marriage celebrated by an authorized celebrant in Quebec<\/li>\n<li>a symbolic marriage with purely symbolic value without legal value<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A civil secular marriage will have legal value while a symbolic secular marriage will have none.<\/p>\n<h2>Conduct of a symbolic secular ceremony<\/h2>\n<p>The form of a secular wedding ceremony is not codified and can be organized according to the needs and desires of the couple.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, a secular marriage ceremony will take place according to the following steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>arrival of providers, guests and groom<\/li>\n<li>arrival of the bride<\/li>\n<li>speech by the celebrant<\/li>\n<li>speeches by the guests<\/li>\n<li>exchange of vows<\/li>\n<li>ritual of sand, candle or other<\/li>\n<li>exchange of wedding rings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Recognition of secular marriage<\/h2>\n<p>A symbolic secular marriage will not be recognized and will have no legal value.<\/p>\n<p>A civil marriage will, if it meets the validity criteria of a civil marriage in Quebec, be considered valid.<\/p>\n<h2>The civil marriage solution<\/h2>\n<p>Couples who want a non-religious marriage will have to turn to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_marriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">civil marriage<\/a> to have a marriage that will be recognized by different states.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a couple wishes to unite, different avenues are available [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1297,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1340","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>What is a secular marriage ceremony?
