In Quebec, you will need to provide certain documents to get married or to unite civilly. Regardless of the celebrant you choose for the celebration, the documents to be provided will be the same.

It is very important to know the documents to provide for a civil marriage or a civil union. It sometimes happens that the future spouses encounter administrative delays in obtaining these documents. It may then be wise to collect them or order them ahead of time. If your documents are written in a language other than French or English, you must provide an official translation for each document.

Whether you choose civil marriage or civil union, the documents to provide are the same.

Identity documents to be provided

The future spouse will have to provide:

  • two pieces of identification, at least one has a photo
  • the original of your birth certificate or a copy of your birth certificate

Documents to prove your marital status

Before getting married or entering into a civil union, you must prove that your marital status allows you to marry or enter into a civil union.

If you are:

  • single, you do not have to provide any documents
  • single following an annulled marriage or civil union, you must provide a certified copy of the annulment judgement
  • single following a dissolved civil union, you must provide a certified copy of the judgement of dissolution of the civil union or an authentic copy of the joint declaration of dissolution received before a notary or a copy of it
  • divorced, you must provide a certified copy of the divorce certificate or a certified copy of the divorce judgement
  • widow(er), you must provide the copy of the death deed or the death certificate of the deceased

Your celebrant will inform you of the documents required for your civil marriage or civil union according to your situation.
